Health Benefits

Olive Oil is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, in particular oleic acid, which helps keep the cardio circulatory system in good health.

Monounsaturated fats help maintain the arteries’ elasticity unlike saturated fats, which are mainly solid at room temperature. Not only do these monounsaturated fats not increase the bodies’ cholesterol level, they also positively affect the “good” cholesterol or HDL level.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil is rich in phenolic compounds which act as natural anti-oxidants and are not present in any other oil. These compounds protect the polyunsaturated fats contained in Olive Oil from oxidation, contributing to its preservation. Polyphenols also protect us against free radicals, helping us to fight the cell ageing process.

All varieties of Olive Oil have the same calorie content, 9 kcal per gram. One tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (20 ml approx.) has the same calorie content as an equal amount of any other seed oil. However, it must be stated that Extra Virgin Olive Oil has the added advantage of its’ great taste. Being more flavoursome than other olive oils, Extra Virgin requires a lesser quantity to achieve the same taste. Opting for fresh ingredients and taking time to correctly dress a salad are other recommendations to get the most out of a quality Olive Oil.

Storing Olive Oil

Light - Prolonged, direct exposure to light, especially sunlight causes the decomposition of Olive Oil, leading to an alteration in the colour (From yellow green to yellow-orange) and a strange taste, therefore it is recommended to store Olive Oil in dark, dry cupboards, protected from light.

Refilling - An oil container with even a drizzle of old oil can contaminate fresh good quality Olive Oil upon refilling. It is recommended to use the original bottle or to empty, wash & dry the oil cruet before refilling.

Temperature - The ideal temperature for storing Olive Oil is between 15-25⁰C (room temperature). Prolonged storage at temperatures over 25⁰C may trigger oxidation, resulting in a disagreeable taste. Storage at temperatures below 10⁰C is also not recommended as extreme cold may induce crystallisation and give it a cloudy appearance. Although not visually appealing it does not compromise the product quality and after a few days at room temperature it will become clear again.

Air - Contact with the air also triggers oxidation and leads to deterioration. It is also recommended to close the bottle after use.

Time - Unlike many wines, which improve with age, Olive Oil is best consumed fresh. The fresher the oil the better its quality. Although it is not harmful for health, Olive Oil may develop an unusual taste eighteen months after bottling.
